Roulette questions
The questions players ask most, each answered with the exact odds for the wheel and rules you play.
- What is the best bet in roulette?
Red/black, odd/even or 1-18/19-36 on a single-zero wheel that plays la partage or en prison. Without those rules, every bet on a single-zero wheel costs the same.
- European vs. American roulette: how much worse is the double zero?
Almost twice as expensive. The second zero nearly doubles what every bet loses on average, so play a single-zero wheel whenever you can.
- Does la partage make a difference in roulette?
Yes: it halves the house edge on red/black, odd/even and 1-18/19-36. It doesn’t change any other bet, so if you play at a la partage table, play the even-money bets.
- Is the five-number bet in American roulette a bad bet?
Yes. The top line (0, 00, 1, 2, 3) is the worst bet on the double-zero layout. Every other bet there costs less.
- Is it better to bet on one number or on red?
Neither costs more: on a single-zero wheel both lose the same share of your bets on average. Red wins often and small; a single number wins rarely and big, which makes a short session closer to a coin flip.
- Is red due after a long run of black?
No. The wheel has no memory: after ten blacks in a row, red has exactly the same chance as on any other spin. Long runs simply happen more often than people expect.
- Is betting on two dozens a good roulette strategy?
No. Covering two dozens wins about two spins in three, but each loss costs twice what a win pays, and the bet keeps the same house edge as any other.
