Does la partage make a difference in roulette?

Yes: it halves the house edge on red/black, odd/even and 1-18/19-36. It doesn’t change any other bet, so if you play at a la partage table, play the even-money bets.

Red on a single-zero wheel: 2.70% without the rule, 1.35% with la partage, 1.39% with en prison (a second zero loses). On a double-zero wheel: 5.26%, or 2.63% with la partage.

House edge of one even-money bet. The en prison rows differ in what a second zero does to a bet already in prison.

Why

An even-money bet loses all its money to a zero. With la partage it loses only half, and since the zero is the house’s whole advantage on those bets, the edge drops by half. En prison holds the bet for another spin instead; if that spin wins, you get the bet back. Its value depends on what happens on a second zero, which varies by casino. Atlantic City double-zero tables have the same rule under the name “surrender”, which brings their even-money bets down too.
