Hold’em vs. Dealer › Questions

Should you bet 2x on the flop with a flush draw in Hold’em vs. Dealer?

Bet 2x when you hold the ace, king or queen of the suit. With a lower flush card, check: the draw alone doesn’t pay for a 2x bet. A jack is a coin flip that depends on your other card.

With A-5 of hearts on a 9-6-2 flop with two hearts, betting 2x is worth +1.0324 per unit of ante and checking +0.7090. With 10-5 of hearts on the same flop: +0.1599 and +0.2483.

Why

Four to a flush makes the flush about a third of the time by the river, and a flush pays the blind 3 to 2 as well. That isn’t enough on its own: most of the time you miss, and then you need your high card to beat the dealer. An ace, king or queen of the suit gives you that second way to win; a ten doesn’t, so checking and deciding on the river is worth more. The popular simple strategy bets with a ten or better, which overbets the lowest of these draws.
