Hold’em vs. Dealer questions
The decisions players ask about most, each with the exact value of every option.
- When should you raise 4x before the flop in Hold’em vs. Dealer?
With any pair from 3s up, any ace, any suited king, K-5 offsuit or better, Q-6 suited or better, Q-8 offsuit or better, J-8 suited or better and J-10 offsuit. Check everything else, including pocket 2s.
- Should you ever raise 3x before the flop in Hold’em vs. Dealer?
No. For every starting hand, either raising 4x or checking is worth more than raising 3x.
- Should you raise 4x with any ace in Hold’em vs. Dealer?
Yes. Every ace is a 4x raise, even ace-deuce offsuit. The weakest aces are only barely worth it, but raising still beats checking.
- Should you play the trips bet in Hold’em vs. Dealer?
Only where it pays 9 to 1 on a full house and 7 to 1 on a flush (50-40-30-9-7-4-3): there it costs less than 1% of the bet. On the other common paytables it costs about 2% to over 6%, so skip it.
- Should you bet 2x on the flop with a flush draw in Hold’em vs. Dealer?
Bet 2x when you hold the ace, king or queen of the suit. With a lower flush card, check: the draw alone doesn’t pay for a 2x bet. A jack is a coin flip that depends on your other card.
- Should you bet 2x on the flop with bottom pair in Hold’em vs. Dealer?
Yes, when one of your own cards makes the pair, even with a weak kicker. Pocket 2s below the board are the exception: check them.
- Should you bet 1x or fold on the river in Hold’em vs. Dealer?
Bet 1x with any pair that uses one of your cards. With nothing, count the dealer’s outs, the unseen cards that would beat you: bet with fewer than 21, fold with 21 or more.
