Craps questions
The bets players ask about most, each with its exact house edge, per bet and per roll.
- Is the field bet a good bet in craps?
Not really. It is a fair bet only where the 12 (or the 2) pays triple, and even then it costs about twice the pass line per bet and loses on every roll it is up.
- Should you take max odds in craps?
Yes, if your bankroll can handle the swings. The odds bet has no house edge, so it lowers the edge on the money you bet without raising what you lose on average per pass line bet.
- Place the 6 and 8, or make come bets?
Come bets with odds cost less per chip bet. Placing the 6 and 8 is a close second and lets you pick your numbers and take them down any time.
- Are hardway bets ever worth it in craps?
No. The hard 6 and 8 cost several times what the place bets on the same numbers do, and the hard 4 and 10 are worse still.
- Pass or don’t pass: which is the better bet?
Don’t pass, by a hair. The difference is so small that betting with the shooter is just as reasonable; both are among the cheapest bets in the casino.
- Should you buy the 4 and 10 instead of placing them?
Yes. Buying the 4 and 10 costs far less than placing them, especially where the 5% commission is charged only on wins. Keep placing the 6 and 8.
- Big 6 and 8 or place 6 and 8?
Place. Both win on the same rolls, but the big 6 and 8 pay even money while the place bet pays 7 to 6, which makes the big bets several times as expensive.
- Are the proposition bets in the middle of the craps table worth it?
No. Any 7, any craps, the yo, the horn and the other one-roll bets are the most expensive bets on the table, and since they are decided every roll, their cost adds up fast.
