Big 6 and 8 or place 6 and 8?
Place. Both win on the same rolls, but the big 6 and 8 pay even money while the place bet pays 7 to 6, which makes the big bets several times as expensive.
House edge: big 6 or 8 9.09%; place 6 or 8 1.52%. Both win 45.45% of their decisions.
Same rolls, different payouts

| Big 6 | 1:1 | 45.45% | 9.09% | 2.78% | 3.27 |
| Big 8 | 1:1 | 45.45% | 9.09% | 2.78% | 3.27 |
| Place 6 | 7:6 | 45.45% | 1.52% | 0.46% | 3.27 |
| Place 8 | 7:6 | 45.45% | 1.52% | 0.46% | 3.27 |
House edge: the average loss as a share of the bet, per bet decided. Per roll spreads it over the rolls the bet takes to win or lose, counting only rolls where it is working.
Why
The big 6 and the place 6 win and lose on exactly the same rolls: a 6 before a 7. The only difference is the payout. Even money on a bet that wins five times for every six losses is a steep price. Many casinos have dropped the big 6 and 8 from their layouts for that reason; where they’re still printed, bet the same numbers as place bets, in multiples of 6.
